It is a variation in the phase angle displacement or three-phase supply value. It can be brought on by both unbalanced loads and unbalanced circuit impedances. It results in thermal impacts, broken equipment, and efficiency loss.

Voltage sags are rapid drops in RMS supply voltage that last anywhere from 0.5 cycles to a minute. Voltage swells are momentary spikes in RMS supply voltage that occur over a threshold of 0.5 cycles to one minute.

The supply frequency is the rate of alternation of the supply voltage wave. The National Electricity Market Management Corporation, or NEMMCO (National Electricity Market Management Company) , is responsible for establishing frequency standards. Frequency norms are established by the regional generating authority outside of the National Electricity Market.

The pattern of the supply voltage or current waveform is repeatedly and consistently deformed. An excessive number of harmonics can lead to further losses, malfunction, radio interference, motor vibration, and poor operation of sensitive equipment.
