- It decreases the RMS current in the power system and helps the elimination of oversized transformers, hence reducing the amount of cable, switchgear, and busbars needed.
- When losses are eliminated and the RMS current value is decreased, performance automatically improves. Harmonics increase losses, elevate the RMS value of current, and result in overheating of cables, transformers, motors, and capacitors. Method for Conducting an Analysis of Power Quality:
- To show non-linear loads, create a single-line graphic.
- Keep an eye out for the point of common link (PCC (Point of Common Coupling)).
- Bring to light the buses inside the facility that may be affected by harmonics.
- Collect as much information as possible on non-linear loads and the utility provider’s prior harmonics performance.
- Create a model using ETAP (Electrical Transient Analysis Program) software and the performance of the electrical system.
- Analyze the voltage and current distortion levels, as well as the harmonics.
- If the degree of harmonic distortion is excessive, select a remedy.
- Repeat the harmonic analysis after adopting the mitigation approach to verify CEC compliance.
